A weekend of fun and education for the whole family, built around the world-famous, agriculturally-themed Strolling of the Heifers Parade, which takes place Saturday, June 8 at 10 a.m. sharp on Brattleboro’s historic Main Street. Watch scores of lovable heifer calves led by future farmers, followed by many other farm animals, bands, tractors, floats, clowns and much more. When it’s over, follow the crowd to the all-day 11-acre Slow Living Expo for food, music, dance, demonstrations, exhibits and fun, all related to our mission of sustaining family farms by connecting people with healthy local food.
And that’s not all: Stroll Weekend starts Friday night, June 7 with our Gallery Walk Street Festival featuring a culinary competition and food, music and dancing in the street; and continues Sunday, June 9 with our Farmers Breakfast, the cycling Tour de Heifer and the Farm, Food and Fiber Tour; plus many other related events during the weekend. Gregory Damien Grinnell. Musician, artist, DJ and web monkey.
I mostly do web work for a day job —some freelance (www.plant802.com), and some for a university in MA— while keeping the creative stuff moving around that schedule. I do, however, do some illustration and have been branching back out into the print world doing posters and other larger format graphic pieces.
Currently, my music mainly revolves around two projects: Mission Creep, based in Boston, which is an electro, jazz/rock hybrid that fuses samples and electronic beats with live drums, horns and guitar. We play somewhat regularly around the northeast (mostly Boston area) and are currently working on our debut album to be out in Fall ’13. The second project, which is somewhat dormant at the moment, is Teledubgnosis, an ambient downtempo dub/dubstep outfit that started in NYC but whose members have scattered around the globe in recent years. Literally. One guy is in Seattle, I’m here, and the drummer, Ted Parsons (Prong, Swans, Godflesh), is in Norway! We’ve put out two albums and were working on a third but…that’s been dragging on for years – not sure if #3 will ever see the light of day.
While I was trained as a painter, my visual work these days is mostly in film and sculpture. I do a lot of “projector art” that collages many disparate visual and film elements using projectors and alternate projection surfaces. This work is incorporated into the live shows of my music projects as well as some “guerrilla” street art using buildings and existing structures as “canvasses.”
I’m also working on some smaller scale “sound art” or “sound sculpture” projects, with infra-sound and sound collages experienced at the threshold of human hearing in an installation setting (i.e., these need to be “viewed” on certain equipment).
However, there are only so many hours in the day, so these projects move up and down the queue as demand dictates!
My wife and I relocated here from Boston in 2004. For years, we had been renting apartments while saving money and toying with the idea of buying a proper house. Additionally, we were (and still are) involved in a couple of dog rescue organizations (New England Border Collie Rescue, Pug Rescue of New England) which rely on a network of foster homes while the dogs are waiting to be adopted, which was, as you can imagine, pretty difficult to participate in when in an apartment situation. This was in the middle of the housing boom, and as we started house-hunting in earnest, we were immediately hit with sticker shock at housing prices around Boston so began to cast our net wider and wider.
My wife is also into horses and she had been coming up to Guilford occasionally to study Centered Riding with Lucille Bump at Southmowing Stables, and had a few local connections. I was a little resistant at first, but eventually fell in love with the area (and the housing prices!).
As I’m sure many of your readers can attest, employment can be a bit of a challenge in Southern Vermont, so I have had periods of working locally mixed with periods of commuting down to Massachusetts. Still, I really love the area and it is a great base from which to pursue some of my other art and music interests.
As someone who grew up in the tail end of the baby-boom, I did get to experience first-hand a little of that classic mid-century world immortalized so well in Mad Men and the films of the Rat Pack. Although I was quite young, the cultural revolution of the 1960’s and the cultural leftovers of the frantic post-WWII boom era left a huge impression. Later, my post-teen formative years were spent in New York right as post-punk was happening (I first hit NYC in 1980). In that scene, there was a huge element of collage using the detritus of post-war culture along with the aftermath of the Vietnam era and the contemporary continuation of the Cold War. You saw a lot of this aesthetic in the bands of the era such as the retro-psych of The Cramps, Ramones and The Fleshtones (which I was briefly a member!) and the jazz mashups of punk-funkers such as The Contortions and The Bush Tetras. On the visual side, you had post-Warhol artists such as David Wojnarowicz and Kenny Scharf and the dawn of graffiti art. That sort of blender aesthetic has always resonated with me, and the “camp” source material is just hardwired in there!

Now, of course, it’s one or more layers removed again, as we are reflecting back on the post-war and Cold War era through the lens of the digital revolution in which culture itself is a kind of perpetual mash-up of the then and the now. With most of my musical and visual work, I’m kind of jumping back and forth between the over-the-top camp of the ‘50’s and ‘60’s and the late ‘70’s/early ‘80’s punk collage aesthetic. In Mission Creep we have sort of zeroed in on 1966 as one of those weird touchstone years where everything was going on at once: free-jazz, pop-jazz, early psychedelia, garage-rock–sometimes all in the same song! You had people like Coltrane and Sun Ra working at the same time as Herb Alpert and John Barry, as well as early psych and garage rock. While there might not have been any overt cross-pollination, it was all in the air.
However, I am not a revivalist or a purist so everything is allowed to pass through and pick up elements of the last 30 years or so as well. The music can—and does—pick up elements of hip-hop and EDM while the visual work has heavy roots in the digital world and, of course, everything is done on computers so that process cannot help but be integrated into the work on some level.
Fridays, 1-3pm on Brattleboro Community Radio WVEW-lp 107.7 fm! Streaming on the web at www.wvew.org!
I also maintain archives of old shows and post playlists (as I am really bad about ID-ing songs on the air) at my tumblr blog for Hello Young Larva!
Hello Young Larva! is essentially the source material of Mission Creep and we pretty much stick to teen-beat, surf, psych, garage rock and jazz from roughly the mid 1950s to the mid-1970s. It’s a somewhat arbitrary cut-off, but, earlier than the mid ‘50’s, there wasn’t really the rock ‘n’ roll influence yet, and after say, 1975, you start to feel the influence of punk and hip-hop which, while fine genres in and of themselves, are out of the scope of what we are trying to feature. We also throw in some TV and movie clips from the period just to keep things interesting.
In addition to myself, we combine the talents of some great veterans of the NYC and Boston jazz and electronic scenes. Our drummer, Yuri Zbitnoff, was in Boston electro-psych-jazz powerhouse Enuma Elish and also lends his sticks to such diverse acts as mardi-gras favorites The Revolutionary Snake Ensemble and gypsy jazz-rockers Axemunkee. Tony Savarino is a New England guitar legend, having played with the likes of Garvy J., Munk Duane, and Dale Bozzio as well as his own country-surf Savtones. In keeping with the members’ jazz roots, we often have guest artists such as avant saxophonist Steve Norton and vocalists Ajda Snyder and Johnny Blazes.
We are currently working on our debut LP to (hopefully) be out by the fall. In the meantime, you can check out some cuts here at our website, www.missioncreep.org, and for anyone in the Boston area, we have a show coming up Thursday, May 30th in Jamaica Plain
We’re trying to get a Western MA/VT/NH mini-tour together this summer. We hope we will see you in Brattleboro soon!
WHEN: Wednesday, May 22, 2013; 7:00 PM until 8:30 PM
WHERE: Brooks Memorial Library Meeting Room
TICKETS: Free!
Please join fellow Civil War enthusiasts and others who treasure family heirlooms for a talk by local area resident Dave Twombly about the discovery of his great-great grandfather’s civil war diary that was written between May-June 1864 as a volunteer minister in the Union Army.
The talk is scheduled for the Library’s meeting room on Wednesday, May 22, at 7 PM.
The diary came to light in 1995 when David’s daughter was in sixth grade and needed information for a report on the Civil War. Twombly’s father, Gilmer, found this Civil War-era memoir entitled “Among the Wounded in 1864,” written by his great-grandfather Alexander S. Twombly in an old steamer trunk some years ago, and then sent her several illustrations from the memoir.
The diary is unique in that it was not written by a Union or Confederate soldier but by a well-educated minister who served as a volunteer for the U.S. Christian Commission in May and June of 1864. “Among the Wounded” also deals almost exclusively with the “human” aspects of what Rev. Twombly encountered, instead of the descriptions of battles, routine camp events, and, of course, the weather, that are usually found in such manuscripts. The diary is illustrated by excellent sketches drawn by Alexander Twombly himself.
“If the Civil War had had a different outcome, my father and mother would have never met. I am very pleased to share my great-great-grandfather’s memoir with other members of the Twombly family and with others who also have a strong interest in the Civil War. In the process, I have found new relatives in Massachusetts, Texas and Arizona I never knew before and have learned a lot more about the Twombly family genealogy.”
David Twombly will show slides of the manuscript with images sketched by his ancestor as well as read parts of the diary.
Twombly is founder of Twombly Wealth Management Group, LLC, an independent financial management firm located in Brattleboro, Vermont. David was a history and political science major in college and has always had a strong interest in American history and particularly in the Civil War.
